Stone Repair

You are here

McHenry County Joint Council of HIstoric Groups fall meeting

Matt Engelmann, chief executive officer of Chicago-based US Heritage Group, gave a quick overview and subsequent demonstration on how to repair historic stone buildings. Among his tips: Never, ever use modern, Portland cement mortar with old stone. it will restrict moisture from escaping and cause the stone or brick to crumble. Mortar needs to be softer than the surrounding stone in order to properly wick moisture out and away from the wall. US Heritage Group offers free training to preservation organizations.
