Maggie Crane, Dorr Township
Maggie has been a resident of McHenry County for 65 years, growing up in Crystal Lake and moving Woodstock in 1974. Her McCarthy ancestors came to Hartland Township in 1848 and her “great-whatever” grandfather Thomas Whitson came to Woodstock in 1854 and operated a hardware store on the Square. Crane’s grandfather, Ed Field, carried on the tradition by operating Field Hardware until 1952.
In 2009 she retired after 38 years at the Woodstock Public Library, and began enjoying spending time organizing the local history collection at the Woodstock library. This includes digitizing books and documents and making them searchable on www.lookatillinois.info. Other activities include membership in McHenry County Audubon Society and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Woodstock. Because she and her husband, Doug, now have time to travel, her “life list” of bird species tops 460. This dynamic duo has visited six continents and all 50 states.
Maggie has always been interested in history, especially local history, so she was “delighted” to be asked to join the board in 2011. Her special interest, not surprisingly, is the research library and helping to preserve the materials it contains.
