Christmas Tree Walk

You are here

The custom of decorating a pine tree for Christmas began in Germany in the 1820s – but only for German families in Pennsylvania. Although decorating at Christmastime with green boughs had been done for centuries in various countries, it wasn't until the 1840s that the custom spread to all of America. All decorations then were either natural or homemade. It was not until the late 1880s that commercial decorations started to be used on trees. The annual Christmas Tree Walk at the Woodstock Opera House gets under way November 26 and continues through Jan. 2. A number of nonprofit organizations are participating.
